First person to perform a wheelchair backflip, inspiring others with disabilities to pursue action sports. Known for pushing boundaries and promoting inclusion in extreme sports.
Aaron Fotheringham is an extreme wheelchair athlete who has taken the action sports world by storm with his mind-boggling tricks adapted from skateboarding and BMX. At just 14 years old, he became the first person to successfully perform a backflip in a wheelchair, and later, a double backflip at 18 – cementing his status as a trailblazer in the world of WCMX (Wheelchair Motocross).
Fotheringham's journey into WCMX began when his brother encouraged him to ride his wheelchair in a skate park. With his dad's thumbs-up, Aaron dropped into a four-foot quarter pipe and, despite multiple falls, finally rode away – hooked from that very moment. This sparked a passion that would change the face of action sports forever.
Fotheringham uses a bespoke wheelchair designed by Box Wheelchairs, featuring four-wheel suspension and a lightweight frame. This innovative design enables him to perform tricks previously thought impossible for wheelchair users, with the suspension cushioning his landings. Aaron has played a crucial role in refining the design, resulting in a custom-made chair that's, in his words, "pretty much indestructible."
Fotheringham emphasizes the importance of wearing a helmet while attempting these tricks, having suffered injuries himself, including a broken elbow. When trying out new tricks, he takes a cautious approach, gradually building up to the final stunt.
Aaron Fotheringham's achievements have opened doors for wheelchair users worldwide, challenging traditional perceptions of disability and ability. His courage, determination, and innovative spirit have inspired a new generation of action sports enthusiasts, paving the way for greater inclusivity and diversity in the industry.
