The family later moved to Brisbane, Queensland, when Lam was just seven years old.
Lam's playing career was nothing short of remarkable. He represented Papua New Guinea in 11 Tests, scoring three tries and kicking one field goal. In 1994, he made his debut for the Kumuls, and in 1995, he delivered a man-of-the-match performance in the third game of the State of Origin series for Queensland. His impressive form led to him captaining the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Team against Australia in 1996 and the Rest of the World team in 1997.
At the club level, Lam played for the Sydney Roosters and Wigan Warriors, featuring in 146 and 119 games, respectively. He scored 42 tries and kicked six field goals for the Roosters, and 44 tries, one goal, and 10 field goals for the Warriors.
