Comorian businessman and politician who served as President of Comoros from 2006 to 2011, known for his efforts to stabilize the country's economy and promote Islamic finance.
Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi, a renowned Islamic leader and politician, is known for being the first peacefully elected President of the Union of the Comoros, serving from 2006 to 2011. This remarkable feat marked a significant milestone in Comorian history, ending a cycle of coups and violence that had plagued the island nation for decades.
Born on June 5, 1958, in Mutsamudu, Anjouan, Comoros, Sambi hails from a prestigious lineage of Hadhrami ancestry, descending from the Ba Alawi family of Hadhramaut, Yemen. He is a proud descendant of Ali al-Uraidhi ibn Jafar al-Sadiq, earning him the esteemed title of Sayyid.
Sambi's educational pursuits took him to Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Qom, Iran, where he delved into Islamic studies. His time in Iran, under the tutelage of Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi, would later influence his nickname, "The Ayatollah of Comoros."
Before venturing into politics, Sambi established himself as a successful businessman, owning factories that produced mattresses, bottled water, and perfume – a key Comorian export. His entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to his community are reflected in his philanthropic efforts, particularly through his television station, Ulezi education.
Sambi's foray into politics began with his independent candidacy in the 2006 presidential primary election on Anjouan, where he secured 23.70% of the vote. He went on to win the presidential election on May 14, 2006, with an impressive 58.02% of the national vote.
During his tenure as President, Sambi worked towards promoting regional cooperation, economic development, and social welfare. His administration's efforts led to improved relations with international organizations and foreign nations.
In 2018, Sambi faced corruption charges related to the Comoros Passport scandal, which led to his arrest and later release.
Despite these challenges, Sambi's legacy as a unifying figure and a champion of peaceful transition remains unwavering. His presidency marked a significant turning point in Comorian history, paving the way for a more stable and democratic future.
Sambi is a devoted family man, with seven children, including two named Intisware and Fatoumat. He resides above his shop, "The House of Mattresses," in Mutsamudu, Anjouan, a testament to his humble beginnings and commitment to his community.
