Notorious female serial killer who murdered seven men in Florida between 1989 and 1990, claiming they raped or attempted to rape her. Her case drew widespread media attention due to its brutality and the fact that she was a woman.
Aileen Wuornos, also known as "The Damsel of Death," was an American serial killer who terrorized the state of Florida in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Between 1989 and 1990, Wuornos shot and killed seven men, claiming that each of them had either raped or attempted to rape her, and that the homicides were committed in self-defense.
Wuornos was born Aileen Carol Pittman on February 29, 1956, in Rochester, Michigan. Her mother, Diane Wuornos, was just 14 years old at the time of her birth, and her father, Leo Pittman, was 18. The marriage was short-lived, and Diane filed for divorce less than two years later, leaving Aileen and her older brother Keith to be raised by their maternal grandparents, Lauri and Britta Wuornos.
Despite the challenges she faced, Wuornos's early life was marked by a series of disturbing and traumatic events. Her father, Leo, was sentenced to life imprisonment for kidnapping and raping a 7-year-old girl, and he later committed suicide in prison. Wuornos's grandparents, who adopted her and her brother, were both alcoholics who subjected her to physical and sexual abuse. By the age of 11, Wuornos was engaging in sexual activities in school in exchange for cigarettes, drugs, and food, and she had also engaged in sexual activities with her brother.
Wuornos's troubled childhood and adolescence set the stage for a life of prostitution and criminal activity. She dropped out of school at the age of 14 and began working as a prostitute to support herself. She was arrested multiple times for crimes such as theft, disorderly conduct, and prostitution, and spent time in and out of jail.
In the late 1980s, Wuornos's life took a deadly turn. She began targeting male clients who she claimed had either raped or attempted to rape her, and she killed seven of them in a span of just over a year. Wuornos's modus operandi was to pose as a prostitute, lure her victims to a remote location, and then shoot them before robbing them of their valuables.
Wuornos was arrested in 1991 and subsequently tried and convicted of six of the seven murders. She was sentenced to death and spent over 10 years on Florida's death row. During her time in prison, Wuornos's story attracted widespread media attention, and she became known as one of the most notorious female serial killers in American history.
On October 9, 2002, Wuornos was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison. Her final words were: "I'd just like to say I'm sailing with the rock, and I'll be back, like Independence Day, with Jesus. June 6, like the movie. Big mother ship and all, I'll be back, I'll be back."
Aileen Wuornos's story has been the subject of numerous books, films, and documentaries. The 2003 film Monster, in which Charlize Theron played Wuornos, won the Academy Award for Best Actress and cemented Wuornos's place in popular culture. Despite her brutal crimes, Wuornos remains a fascinating and complex figure, and her story continues to captivate and horrify audiences to this day.
