Akua Shma, born Yuki Takahata, is a Japanese professional sumo wrestler from Ibaraki Prefecture, renowned for his remarkable journey to the top makuuchi division and his inspiring story of perseverance amidst adversity.
Akua Shma's sumo career began in November 2010, when he joined the Tatsunami stable. However, his journey was not without its challenges. In 2011, his hometown was severely affected by the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, prompting him to consider quitting sumo to return home and help his community. Fortunately, his father, a national wrestling champion in his junior high school days, persuaded Akua to continue pursuing his sumo dreams.
In March 2014, Akua changed his shikona (sumo name) from Toyononami to Akua, paying tribute to the Aqua World aquarium in his hometown. This symbolic change marked a turning point in his career, as he began to make a name for himself in the sumo world.
Akua Shma made his makuuchi debut in November 2020, at the age of 30, and secured a winning record in his top division debut. This achievement was a testament to his hard work and dedication, as he overcame the odds to reach the pinnacle of sumo.
In December 2020, Akua was one of several members of his stable to test positive for COVID-19. Despite this setback, he returned to the ring in January 2021, although he was demoted back to the jry division after scoring only 5-10. Undeterred, Akua worked his way back to the top division, achieving a winning record in November 2021 and earning promotion to his highest rank to date, maegashira 10, in January 2022.
