Born Jos Alberto Garca Gallo on March 11, 1940, in Rancul, La Pampa Province, Argentina, Cortez began his musical journey at the tender age of six at the Alberto Williams conservatory. By twelve, he was already composing songs, including "Un cigarrillo, la lluvia y t."
At seventeen, Cortez became the singer of the Arizona orchestra, where he was known as Chiquito Garca. He later went on to study at the Social Sciences and Law School of Buenos Aires, singing in bars to support himself. It was during this time that he began to use his pseudonym Alberto Cortez while singing with the orchestra of Armando Pointier.
Cortez's big break came when he traveled to Antwerp, Belgium, and recorded his first album. His song "Sucu Sucu" reached number one, launching his career as a singer-songwriter.
Cortez met his future wife, Renee Govaerts, in Belgium, and the couple eventually married. Together, they settled in Madrid, Spain, where Cortez continued to compose and perform music.
