Italian crooner known for his smooth, velvety voice and iconic hits like "Marinella" and "Romantica", popularizing Italian music globally.
Alberto Rabagliati was an Italian jazz singer, renowned for his smooth, velvety voice and unique blend of American jazz and Italian music. Born on June 27, 1906, in Milan, Italy, Rabagliati's career spanned over three decades, leaving an indelible mark on the Italian music scene.
Rabagliati was born to Piedmontese spouses, Leandro Valentino Rabagliati and Delfina Besso, in Milan. His early life was marked by a fascination with music, which led him to participate in a Rudolph Valentino lookalike contest in 1927. His win in the contest brought him to Hollywood, where he spent four years trying to make it big as an actor. Although his acting career didn't take off, he was introduced to new musical genres like jazz, swing, and scat singing, which would later shape his musical style.
After his return to Europe, Rabagliati began his singing career, performing with Pippo Barzizza's orchestra and later joining the Lecuona Cuban Boys, a Cuban band. It was during this period that he developed his signature style, characterized by his smooth vocals and impeccable phrasing. His hit song, "Maria la O," became a sensation, and he soon became a radio star, hosting his own show, "Canta Rabagliati" (Rabagliati Sings), on EIAR (Italian state radio station) in 1941.
Rabagliati's radio show, "Canta Rabagliati," was a huge success, featuring his most famous songs like "Ma l'amore no," "Mattinata fiorentina," "BaBaBaciami Piccina," and "Silenzioso slow." His popularity was so immense that his name was even referenced in the lyrics of other songs, such as "La famiglia canterina" and "Quando canta Rabagliati." During a time when foreign influences were discouraged, Rabagliati's American-influenced style was an anomaly, and he was allowed to maintain his unique sound.
In 1954, Rabagliati married Maria Antonietta Tonnini in Rome. He continued to perform and record music throughout his life, leaving behind a legacy of Italian jazz classics.
Alberto Rabagliati's contribution to Italian jazz is immeasurable. He introduced American jazz to Italy, blending it with local flavors to create a unique sound that captivated audiences. His smooth, velvety voice and impeccable phrasing influenced generations of Italian singers, and his music remains popular to this day.
Alberto Rabagliati's music and legacy continue to inspire new generations of musicians and fans alike, cementing his place as one of the most iconic Italian jazz singers of all time.
