Keshishian was born on July 30, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon, to Cecile Keshishian (née Simonian) and Kevork Keshishian, a pediatrician. His family immigrated to the United States in 1969 and settled in Manchester, New Hampshire, where they were actively involved in the Armenian community. Keshishian and his younger sister, Aleen, grew up speaking English and Armenian and were encouraged to pursue their passion for the arts.
After graduating with honors from Harvard University in 1986, Keshishian moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in filmmaking. He began directing music videos for notable artists such as Bobby Brown, Run-DMC, and Elton John. His breakthrough came when Madonna, impressed by his senior thesis, a pop-opera adaptation of Wuthering Heights, reached out to him to collaborate on a project.
