Alexander Charles Yoong Loong, affectionately known as Alex Yoong, is a Malaysian professional racing driver who made history by becoming the first Malaysian to compete in Formula One (F1). With a career spanning over two decades, Yoong has left an indelible mark on the world of motorsport.
Born on July 20, 1976, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Yoong was exposed to the thrill of racing from a young age. His father, Hanifah Yoong Yin Fah, was an avid racing enthusiast who competed in sedan races, and his mother, Johanna Bean, also took part in racing events. This familial influence sparked Yoong's passion for racing, which would eventually become his profession.
Yoong's career began in the Proton onemake series, where he honed his skills and eventually moved on to single-seater cars. In 1995, he clinched the Malaysian Championship, a feat that catapulted him to the international racing scene. With the support of sponsors, Yoong competed in Formula Renault in 1996, although he finished outside the top 10. Undeterred, he consulted his father, who advised him to focus on lower categories, where he could fine-tune his skills.
In 1999, Yoong dropped out of Formula Three due to the withdrawal of sponsors, but he persisted, moving on to Formula 3000. His determination paid off, as he managed to improve his performance despite facing a horrific crash at Spa-Francorchamps during the season.
In 2001, Yoong made history by becoming the first Malaysian to compete in Formula One, racing for Minardi at the Italian Grand Prix. Although his F1 stint was short-lived, ending in 2002, Yoong went on to compete in various other racing series, including CART World Series, Porsche Carrera Cup, and V8 Supercars.
Between 2005 and 2008, Yoong participated in the A1 Grand Prix series, securing three victories. During this period, he also raced in the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours event.
After retiring from professional racing, Yoong continued to contribute to the motorsport community. He worked as the head of driver development for Lotus Racing and became a commentator for Fox Sports Asia, sharing his expertise with racing enthusiasts.
Yoong's cultural heritage is a unique blend of Chinese, English, and Malaysian roots. His grandfather, Yoong Wan Hoi, emigrated from China to Malaysia in 1933, and his parents instilled in him a strong sense of Malaysian identity. In an interview, Yoong emphasized that he identifies as a Malaysian first, followed by his Chinese and English heritage.
