Russian figure skater who won four World Championships and one Olympic gold medal, known for his technical precision and artistic expression.
Alexei Yagudin is a Russian former competitive figure skater who dominated the sport in the late 1990s and early 2000s, earning himself the title of Olympic champion, four-time World champion, and three-time European champion. He is the only skater to have achieved a Golden Slam, winning all major championships in the same season, including the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships, Grand Prix assignments, and Grand Prix Final.
Yagudin was born on March 18, 1980, in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. His introduction to skating came at the age of four, when his mother, Zoya, saw it as a way to improve his health. Under the guidance of his first coach, Alexander Mayorov, Yagudin quickly mastered his jumps, learning all his double jumps before age ten, the five triple jumps before age twelve, and the triple Axel jump before he turned thirteen.
Yagudin's rise to stardom began in 1996, when he won the World Junior Championships. He continued to dominate the junior circuit, winning the European Championships in 1998 and 1999. His senior debut was a success, as he won the World Championships in 1998, 1999, and 2000.
The 2001-2002 season was Yagudin's most impressive, as he became the first and only skater to achieve a Golden Slam, winning all major championships in the same season. He won the Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships, Grand Prix assignments, and Grand Prix Final, cementing his status as one of the greatest figure skaters of all time.
After retiring from eligible skating, Yagudin has remained involved in the sport, touring as a professional skater and appearing as a show host, actor, and figure skating commentator for Russian television networks. In 2019, he opened the Figure Skating Center Alexei Yagudin in Minsk, Belarus, where he coaches.
Alexei Yagudin's legacy extends beyond his impressive list of championships and accolades. He has inspired a generation of figure skaters, and his achievements have raised the bar for the sport as a whole. His influence on modern figure skating is undeniable, and he remains one of the greatest figure skaters of all time.
