Algirdas Butkeviius is a Lithuanian politician who served as the Prime Minister of Lithuania from 2012 to 2016, leaving an indelible mark on the country's economic landscape. Born on November 19, 1958, in Paeeriai village, Radvilikis district municipality, Butkeviius grew up in a modest family. After completing his secondary education in 1977, he served in the Signals-Communications Troops of the Soviet Army from 1977 to 1979, rising to the rank of Junior Sergeant. He later pursued a degree in Engineering Economics from the Vilnius Civil Engineering Institute, graduating in 1984.
Butkeviius's political career began in 1992 when he joined the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the chairman of the Vilkavikis District section of LSDP in 1995. His leadership skills and economic acumen earned him the position of Minister of Finance from 2004 to 2005 and Minister of Transport and Communications from 2006 to 2008.
In 2009, he became the chairman of LSDP and ran for the presidential election, securing 11.83% of the votes. His popularity and leadership skills paved the way for his appointment as Prime Minister in 2012, a position he held until 2016.
