Born on October 7, 1978, in Royston, Hertfordshire, Balsom's love affair with the trumpet began at the tender age of seven. She attended Tannery Drift First School, where she started taking trumpet lessons, followed by Greneway Middle School and Meridian School. Her early years were also spent playing in the Royston Town Band from ages 8 to 15.
Balsom's passion for music led her to pursue higher education at Hills Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge, where she took her A-levels. She then went on to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, graduating in 2001 with first-class honors and the Principals Prize for the highest mark. Her musical journey also took her to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and the Conservatoire de Paris, where she studied with the renowned trumpet virtuoso, Håkan Hardenberger.
Balsom's professional career began in 2001, and she quickly rose to prominence as a solo classical trumpeter. She became a former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, performing with all of the BBC Orchestras and releasing her debut album with EMI Classics in 2002.
In 2005, she released her second album, Bach Works for Trumpet, as part of her contract with EMI Classics. Her subsequent albums, including Caprice (2006) and Italian Concertos (2009), received critical acclaim and were nominated for several awards.
