Born on March 13, 1971, in Esbjerg, Denmark, Nielsen's footballing journey began at Sdding-Guldager Idrtsforening SGI before joining Esbjerg's academy. He made a move abroad in 1989 to join German Bundesliga team Bayern Munich at the tender age of 18.
Although he spent three years at Bayern Munich, Nielsen only managed to play six minutes in a single game in May 1991, coming on as a substitute in a 7-3 win against Hertha BSC. Failing to break through at Bayern Munich, he left the club in the summer of 1991.
Nielsen initially signed a three-year contract with Sion in June 1991, but he never played a game for the club. He swiftly moved back to Denmark, joining OB in the Danish Superliga championship, where he debuted in September 1991.
At Odense, he was part of the team that won the 1993 Danish Cup. He was then brought to league rivals Copenhagen in 1994, where he played a single season as team captain. In 1995, he moved to main rivals Brndby, winning the 1995-96 Danish Superliga championship and earning the Brndby 1995 Player of the Year award.
Nielsen's impressive form earned him a call-up to the Danish national team under national manager Richard Mller Nielsen. He made his debut against Armenia on August 16, 1995, coming on as a substitute and scoring the second goal in Denmark's 2-0 win just 45 seconds into his debut.
He went on to represent Denmark at the Euro 96 tournament, 1998 FIFA World Cup, and Euro 2000 tournaments, cementing his status as a vital midfielder for his country.
