Alvise Foscari, a distinguished Venetian nobleman, made his mark in history as a skilled naval officer and administrator, serving the Republic of Venice during a period of significant turmoil and transformation. Born on August 3, 1724, Foscari was part of the esteemed San Simeon Piccolo branch of the Foscari family, one of the most prominent families in the Venetian patriciate.

Foscari's family wealth had declined significantly, prompting him to pursue a career in the Venetian navy. He entered service on May 4, 1743, as a gentleman cadet (nobile di nave). During the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), Foscari served in the Adriatic Sea, where he received his first promotion to captain of a ship (governatore di nave) on December 13, 1747.

Following the war, Foscari served in various shore duties, including in the Arsenal of Venice (June 24, 1753 - February 23, 1756) and as a director in the Banco del Giro (October 6, 1756 - January 5, 1757). With the outbreak of the Seven Years War (1756-1763), Foscari resumed his naval career, achieving senior command positions:

• Patron delle Navi (rear admiral of the sailing fleet) on May 17, 1759
• Almirante (vice admiral of the sailing fleet) on April 28, 1762
• Capitano delle Navi (admiral of the sailing fleet) on April 13, 1765

After the war, Foscari returned to civilian duties, serving in the Great Council of Venice. He occupied the post of supervisor of deposits (Conservatore del Deposito) from December 2, 1773, to August 30, 1775, and was one of the magistrates supervising public morals.

Alvise Foscari left an indelible mark on Venetian history, demonstrating exceptional leadership and administrative skills during a period of turmoil. His distinguished naval career and civilian duties showcased his versatility and dedication to the Republic of Venice.

Foscari was born to Alvise Foscari and Marta Dal Poggio, a non-noble but burgher family. He passed away on December 27, 1783, in Cephalonia.
