As a renowned film director, producer, screenwriter, and animator, Andrew Adamson is best known for bringing beloved stories to life on the big screen. Specifically, he is credited with directing the DreamWorks animated films Shrek (2001) and its sequel Shrek 2 (2004), both based on the book of the same name by William Steig.
Born on December 1, 1966, in New Zealand, Adamson's parents were a homemaker and a computer engineer. When he was eleven years old, his family moved to Papua New Guinea, where he spent seven years before returning to Auckland. At the age of 24, he made the move to San Francisco and divided his time between there and Los Angeles.
Adamson's initial dream was to become an architect, but a car accident caused him to miss a university enrollment deadline. Instead, he was recruited by Pacific Data Images to work in the USA, where he began his career in the film industry.
Adamson's breakthrough came when he served as a technical director for Toys (1992) and Angels in the Outfield (1994). He then specialized in ads but soon shifted his focus to storytelling in longer formats. As a visual effects supervisor, he worked on Batman Forever (1995), A Time to Kill (1996), and Batman & Robin (1997).
Adamson's directorial debut with Shrek (2001) was a massive success, grossing nearly $500 million worldwide on a modest budget of $60 million. The film's success led to the sequel Shrek 2 (2004), which earned him an Academy Award nomination.
In 2005, Adamson directed and co-wrote the live-action film adaptation of C.S. Lewis's novel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The film's success led to its sequel, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008).
