Andrew Brunette is a Canadian professional ice hockey coach and former player, renowned for his 1,100+ game NHL career and current stint as the head coach of the Nashville Predators.
Born on August 24, 1973, in Valley East, Ontario, Brunette grew up with a passion for hockey, playing for the Rayside-Balfour Sabrecats of the Northern Ontario Hockey Association (NOHA). His impressive Midget season in 1989-1990 earned him a seventh-round selection in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Priority Selection by the Owen Sound Platers.
Brunette's three seasons with the Platers (1990-1993) saw him score 295 points in 195 games, culminating in him winning the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy, the OHL's scoring title, in 1993. His remarkable performance led to him being drafted by the Washington Capitals in the seventh round (174th overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft.
Brunette began his professional career in the ECHL with the Hampton Roads Admirals, eventually moving to the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Providence Bruins and Portland Pirates. His impressive play earned him a call-up to the Capitals in the 1995-1996 season, where he played 11 NHL games. Over the next few seasons, he played 51 more games for Washington before being selected by the Nashville Predators in the 1998 NHL Expansion Draft.
Notably, Brunette scored the Predators' first-ever goal, marking the beginning of a long and successful NHL career that spanned over 16 seasons, including stints with the Atlanta Thrashers, Minnesota Wild, Colorado Avalanche, and Chicago Blackhawks.
After retiring as a player in 2012, Brunette transitioned into coaching, serving as the interim head coach for the Florida Panthers, assistant coach for the Minnesota Wild and New Jersey Devils, and assistant general manager for the Wild. In 2021, he became the head coach of the Nashville Predators, where he continues to lead the team today.
