Under the guidance of Sharks coach Terry Fearnley, ET made his first-grade debut in 1983, impressing with a try-scoring performance against the Newtown Jets. He solidified his position in the team, playing mostly at fullback or in the centres, and scored ten tries in the 1985 season.
