Bathgate's professional career began with the Cleveland Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL) in the 1952-1953 season. He bounced between the Western Hockey League (WHL) Vancouver Canucks and the Rangers for two seasons before settling with the Rangers in the 1954-1955 season.
It was during his 10-year tenure with the Rangers that Bathgate became a fan favorite in New York and a top-tiered player in the NHL. In the 1961-1962 season, he led the league in points alongside Bobby Hull, but narrowly lost the Art Ross Trophy to Hull due to Hull's higher goal tally.

In May 1965, Bathgate was traded to the Detroit Red Wings, where he helped the team reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 1966. Two years later, he was chosen by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1967 NHL Expansion Draft, scoring the first goal in Penguins history.
