Rees' thirst for knowledge and culture led her to study at the Sorbonne in Paris for two terms and later at the University of Madrid.
Before making her mark on television, Rees honed her craft in repertory theatre in England. Her television debut came in 1968 with a small role as a parlour maid in an adaptation of Shaw's Man and Superman, alongside esteemed actors Eric Porter and Maggie Smith. This marked the beginning of a prolific television career, with appearances in a range of dramas and comedy series, including The Way We Live Now, The Avengers, and Doctor in the House.
Rees' early notable roles included playing the daughter of Winston Churchill, opposite Richard Burton, in The Gathering Storm (1974) and Lucy in Dennis Potter's television play Joes Ark (1974). Her performance in Joes Ark was praised by director Alan Bridges as one of the finest he had ever witnessed. She also played Celia in As You Like It, opposite Helen Mirren, in 1978.
