After completing his National Service in the Royal Signals, Jay joined BBC Television in 1955, becoming a member of the team that launched the current affairs program Tonight. He went on to edit the program from 1962 to 1963 and later served as Head of Television Talk Features from 1963 to 1964. In 1964, he left the BBC to pursue a career as a freelance writer and producer.
Jay's writing credits include The Householders Guide to Community Defence Against Bureaucratic Aggression (1972) and the 1969 BBC television documentary Royal Family. He also penned a 1992 book about Elizabeth II, titled Elizabeth R, which earned him a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order for personal services to the royal family in the 1993 New Year Honors list.
