At Rangers, Niemi initially competed with Andy Goram and Theo Snelders for the goalkeeper position, making seven appearances in his first season. The following season, he began competing with Lionel Charbonnier, eventually starting the 1998 Scottish League Cup final, which Rangers won. Although he contributed to Rangers' Scottish Premier League title win in the 1998-1999 season, Niemi only made seven league appearances, with Stefan Klos becoming the first-choice goalkeeper.

In December 1999, Niemi moved to Heart of Midlothian, where he became a hero for the club. He then made the move to the Premier League, playing for Southampton and Fulham, showcasing his skills against some of the world's top players.

After announcing his retirement in 2008 due to injury, Niemi returned to the game in 2009, signing with Portsmouth.
