De Silva was born on October 17, 1965, in Sri Lanka. He received his initial education at Isipathana College, Colombo, and later attended D. S. Senanayake College, Colombo.
De Silva's cricket career spanned over two decades, during which he established himself as a formidable all-rounder. He made his debut in 1984 and went on to play 93 Test matches, scoring over 6,000 runs at an average of 42.97. He also took 106 wickets at an average of 33.45.
One of his most notable achievements was becoming the first man to score two unbeaten hundreds in a Test, against Pakistan in 1997. He also holds the record for being the only player to make a hundred and take three or more wickets in a World Cup final.
In 1995, de Silva joined the English county side Kent, where he had a successful season, playing first-class cricket. Although Kent finished last in the County Championship, they performed well in the 40-overs National Cricket League, finishing top of the league table.
