Born on September 8, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, Goodwin spent his formative years in small towns along the Kansas-Missouri border. He developed a passion for comics at an early age, scouring used magazine stores for EC Comics. This fascination led him to form a cartoonists' club with classmates, including Paul Davis and Russell Myers, at Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
After a year at the University of Oklahoma, Goodwin moved to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts. He began his career as a cartoonist, drawing for magazines and working as a freelance writer and art assistant to Leonard Starr's newspaper comic strip Mary Perkins, On Stage.
Goodwin's first editorial work was for Redbook magazine from 1960 to 1964. During this period, he also did cartoons for Fishing World magazine in 1959. His first written story, illustrated by Al Williamson and Roy Krenkel, was published in 1962, just after his discharge from the Army.
In 1964, Goodwin became the chief writer and editor of Warren Publishing's horror anthology titles Creepy and Eerie, cementing his reputation as a master of the macabre. His work on these titles showcased his unique blend of atmospheric storytelling and clever plot twists, earning him a devoted following.
