Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on April 15, 1972, Gatti relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey, as a teenager, where he found a manager he trusted and decided to turn pro. Before turning pro, Gatti was a member of the Canadian National team, training to represent Canada at the 1992 Summer Games.
Gatti began his professional boxing career on June 10, 1991, with a third-round knockout of Jose Gonzalez in Secaucus, New Jersey. He went undefeated for six bouts before losing to King Solomon by split decision in six rounds on November 17, 1992. Gatti's next fight, on March 24, 1993, was his first fight abroad, where he visited Amsterdam, Netherlands and knocked out Plawen Goutchev in round one.
In 1995, Gatti won the IBF junior lightweight title, which he held until 1998. He later won the WBC super lightweight title in 2004, holding it until 2005. During his career, Gatti participated in four Fight of the Year bouts, as recognized by The Ring magazine, in 1997, 1998, 2002, and 2003.
Gatti announced his retirement on July 14, 2007, after a successful career. He returned to Montreal, where he worked in real estate and remained involved in the boxing community.
Gatti's life was cut short on July 11, 2009, when he was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Brazil. His Brazilian wife was arrested for his homicide, but later released after an autopsy ruled his death a suicide. Subsequent investigations could not agree on Gatti's cause of death, and discovered a history of suicidal ideation. Despite the controversy surrounding his death, Gatti's legacy as a fearless and exciting boxer lives on, inspiring future generations of boxers.
