Audra Ann McDonald was born on July 3, 1970, in Berlin, Germany, to Anna Kathryn and Stanley McDonald Jr. She grew up in Fresno, California, and developed an interest in acting and singing at a young age. McDonald attended the Roosevelt School of the Arts program in Fresno and later enrolled in the Juilliard School in New York City, where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1993.
Mcdonald's Broadway debut came in 1994 with the musical Carousel, for which she won her first Tony Award. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career, with subsequent Tony Awards for Master Class (1996), Ragtime (1998), A Raisin in the Sun (2004), Porgy and Bess (2012), and Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill (2014).
