Born on October 20, 1961, in Skien, Norway, Audun Kleive hails from a family of musicians. His father, Kristoffer Kleive, was an organist, and his brother, Iver Kleive, is also an organist. This musical heritage laid the foundation for Kleive's future in jazz.
Kleive began his musical journey by playing drums in a rock and dance band before moving to Oslo, where he studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music. His professional career took off when he joined the jazz-rock groups Lotus (1981-1983) and Oslo 13 (1984).
