Augustyn Kordecki: The Fearless Prior of Jasna Góra

Augustyn Kordecki, a Polish prior of the Jasna Góra Monastery, is renowned for his bravery and strategic prowess in defending the monastery against the Swedish troops during the Deluge of 1655. This heroic act of selflessness and devotion earned him a place in Polish history as a national hero.

Early Life and Education

Born Klemens Kordecki on November 16, 1603, in Iwanowice, Poland, to a bourgeois family, Augustyn was the second of three children. His father, Marcin, served as the mayor of Iwanowice in 1615-1616. Augustyn's early education began at the local parish school, where he excelled, prompting his parents to enroll him in the Junior High School of St. Mary Magdalene.

He later pursued philosophy at the Jesuit college in Kalisz (1624-1628) and theology at the Jesuit college in Poznań (1628-1633). It was during his studies that he was influenced by the Pauline monks, which ultimately led him to join the monastic life.

Life as a Pauline Monk

In 1633, Augustyn entered the Pauline Order at the age of 30, taking the religious name Augustyn. He underwent his novitiate under the direction of Father Adam Preacher OSPPE at Jasna Góra. Due to an epidemic, he temporarily relocated to the monastery farm in Konopiska, where he continued his novitiate under Father Tomasz Bieniaszewicz OSPPE.

After completing his novitiate, Augustyn was sent to Wieluń, where he taught rhetoric to young people. He made his profession on March 19, 1633, solidifying his commitment to the Pauline Order.

The Defence of Jasna Góra

In 1655, during the Deluge, Swedish troops laid siege to the Jasna Góra Monastery, intent on plundering its riches. Prior Augustyn Kordecki, undaunted by the overwhelming odds, rallied the monks and a small group of defenders, fortifying the monastery's walls and preparing for battle.

Through a series of strategic decisions, including the use of trapdoors and cleverly positioned cannons, Prior Kordecki orchestrated a successful defence, repelling the Swedish forces and saving the monastery's treasures. This heroic act earned him recognition as a national hero and a symbol of Polish resistance against foreign occupation.

Legacy and Impact

Augustyn Kordecki's bravery and selflessness have inspired generations of Poles, cementing his place in Polish history. His defence of Jasna Góra Monastery has become a symbol of Polish resilience and determination, and his legacy continues to inspire and motivate people to this day.

Today, Jasna Góra Monastery remains a significant pilgrimage site, attracting millions of visitors each year. The monastery's museum showcases artefacts from the Deluge, including cannons and fortifications used during the defence. A testament to Prior Kordecki's ingenuity and bravery, the monastery stands as a beacon of hope and resistance against adversity.
