Lead vocalist of bands Of Mice & Men and Attack Attack!, known for his aggressive screams and clean vocals in the metalcore genre.
Austin Robert Carlile, born on September 27, 1987, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician from Pensacola, Florida. He rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of Attack Attack and later, Of Mice & Men, leaving an indelible mark on the music industry.
Carlile formed Attack Attack, originally called Ambiance, in 2006 with Johnny Franck, Andrew Whiting, Nick White, and Andrew Wetzel, meeting while playing in local high school bands. The band's early success led to a tour supporting Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Confide, A Static Lullaby, and Showbread in 2008. However, halfway through the tour, Carlile left the band, citing personal reasons.
On October 8, 2009, Carlile announced the formation of his new project, Of Mice & Men, with Jaxin Hall. The band's early releases, including Seven Thousand Miles for What and a cover of Lady Gaga's Poker Face, sparked interest in the music scene. The self-titled debut album was released on March 9, 2010, after a brief delay.
Carlile's musical career was heavily influenced by his struggles with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting the body's connective tissue. Multiple surgeries during his teenage years led him to focus on music, which became an integral part of his life. However, the vocal demands of touring with Of Mice & Men took a toll on his body, prompting his departure from the band in December 2016.
After leaving Of Mice & Men, Carlile shifted his focus to coaching youth baseball in Costa Rica, a far cry from the intense touring schedule of his musical career.
Austin Carlile's contributions to the music industry, particularly in the metalcore genre, are undeniable. His powerful vocals and songwriting skills left an indelible mark on both Attack Attack and Of Mice & Men. His story serves as a testament to the power of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.
Through his music and public statements, Carlile has emphasized the importance of perseverance, self-awareness, and empathy. His experiences with Marfan syndrome have instilled in him a deeper appreciation for life and a commitment to inspiring others.
Austin Carlile's musical career coincided with the rise of metalcore and post-hardcore genres in the late 2000s and early 2010s. His contributions to both Attack Attack and Of Mice & Men helped shape the sound of these genres, influencing a generation of musicians and fans alike.
Carlile's story serves as a reminder of the human element behind the music, highlighting the importance of empathy, resilience, and passion in the face of adversity.
