Barbara Ruth Greenberg, aka Barbara Delinsky, was born on August 8, 1945, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her mother's untimely death when she was just eight years old would have a profound impact on her life and writing. After graduating from Newton High School in 1963, she went on to earn a B.A. in Psychology from Tufts University and an M.A. in Sociology at Boston College.
Before pursuing a career in writing, Delinsky worked for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and volunteered at hospitals. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and their Women's Cancer Advisory Board.
