Becky Kellar-Duke is a Canadian women's ice hockey legend, known for her impressive career spanning over two decades, four Olympic Games, and numerous accolades. As a defender for the Canadian women's national team, she has left an indelible mark on the sport, inspiring generations of female hockey players.
Kellar-Duke was born on January 1, 1975, in Hagersville, Ontario. She began playing ringette as a child before switching to hockey, eventually competing for Team Ontario at the National Under 18 Championships in 1993. Her impressive skills earned her the Most Valuable Player award, leading Team Ontario to a gold medal.
Kellar-Duke attended Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she played for the Brown Bears women's ice hockey program from 1993 to 1997. During her time at Brown, she was a dual threat, also playing second base on the softball team, earning First Team All-Ivy League selections in 1995 and 1997.
Kellar-Duke played for the Beatrice Aeros in 1998, participating in the championship game of the Esso Nationals. She later joined the Burlington Barracudas of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL), where she excelled as a defender, earning the CWHL Top Defender award in the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons. She was also a CWHL Central All-Star during those years.
Kellar-Duke's Olympic debut came at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. She went on to participate in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Her fourth and final Olympic appearance was at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, where she helped Canada win the gold medal.
Kellar-Duke is married and lives in Burlington, Ontario. She has two sons, Owen (born 2004) and Zachary (born 2007), making her the first player on the Canadian national women's hockey team to have children.
On September 14, 2010, Hockey Canada announced Kellar-Duke's retirement from international hockey.
