Curtis's guitar heroes, including Michael Rother, Yoshimi P-We, and The Edge of U2, greatly influenced his unique sound. This sonic palette, combined with his boundless creativity, earned him a spot as a founding member of Tripping Daisy and later as a key contributor to Secret Machines.
However, it was his collaboration with Alejandra Deheza in School of Seven Bells that showcased his full range as a songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist. Together, they crafted dreamy, electronic-infused indie rock that captivated audiences and critics worldwide.
Benjamin Curtis was in a romantic relationship with Alejandra Deheza from 2005 to 2010. Despite their eventual separation, they remained close friends and bandmates until Curtis's untimely passing. Deheza later referred to Curtis as her "best friend and soulmate" in the liner notes for School of Seven Bells' final album, SVIIB.
In February 2013, Curtis announced that he had been diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. The music community rallied around him, hosting a benefit concert in New York that August, featuring performances by members of The Strokes and Interpol.
Despite his valiant fight, Curtis tragically passed away on December 29, 2013, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
