A Kenyan long-distance runner, he won the 1999 Boston Marathon and set multiple national records in the 10,000 meters and half-marathon events.
Benjamin Kipkoech Limo, born on August 23, 1974, is a Kenyan former middle and long-distance runner, renowned for his exceptional performances in the 5000 meters event, where he has won numerous international medals.
Limo's athletic journey began in 1993 when he enlisted in the Kenyan Army, putting his education on hold. He started full-time training in 1996 and was based at an army camp in Ngong, near Nairobi. His first international competition was the 1998 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Marrakech, Morocco, where he finished fourth in the short race.
In 1999, Limo won the World Cross Country Championships and placed second in the 5000 meters at the World Championships, narrowly missing the gold medal by less than a second. This achievement was remarkable, considering he had only started competing at the 5000 meters distance 13 months prior.
Limo was awarded the 2005 Kenyan Sportsman of the Year award, a testament to his outstanding achievements in the world of athletics.
Benjamin Limo is married and has four children as of 2006. Although he never participated in the Olympic Games due to Kenya's abundance of talented middle-distance runners, his contribution to the sport has left a lasting impact.
Limo is managed by Ricky Simms and is not related to world champion Richard Limo, but might be distantly related to another Kenyan runner, Felix Limo.
Benjamin Limo's remarkable career serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes, and his legacy continues to inspire future generations of runners.
