Benjamin Orr, born Benjamin Orzechowski, was an American musician, bassist, and co-lead vocalist of the legendary rock band The Cars. Known for his distinctive vocals on hits like "Just What I Needed", "Let's Go", "Moving in Stereo", and "Drive", Orr's contributions to the band's success were instrumental in shaping their unique sound.
Orr was born on September 8, 1947, in Lakewood, Ohio, to immigrant parents. His mother, Elizabeth, was Carpatho-Rusyn, and his father, Charles, was born in present-day Ukraine. Both were devout Byzantine Rite Catholics, and Orr's family actively supported his musical endeavors from a young age. He became proficient in several instruments, including the guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, and drums.
In 1964, Orr joined local band The Grasshoppers, a instrumental-based foursome that released two singles on the Sunburst label, "Mod Socks" and "Pink Champagne and Red Roses", the latter written by Orr himself. The Grasshoppers were also the house band on the Big 5 Show, a musical variety television show produced by WEWSTV in Cleveland.
In the mid-1970s, Orr co-founded The Cars with Ric Ocasek, and the band quickly gained popularity with their debut album "The Cars" in 1978. The album featured hits like "Just What I Needed" and "My Best Friend's Girl", both showcasing Orr's signature vocals. Throughout the 1980s, The Cars released several successful albums, including "Candy-O", "Panorama", and "Shake It Up", solidifying their status as one of the most iconic rock bands of the era.
In the late 1980s, Orr pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album "The Lace" in 1986. Although the album was moderately successful, it was the single "Stay the Night" that gained significant attention, becoming a hit in 1986.
In 2018, Orr was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Cars. His contributions to the band's unique sound and his solo work have left an indelible mark on the music industry.
Orr was devoted to his family and was known for his charity work, particularly in his hometown of Cleveland. He was also an avid car enthusiast and loved to collect vintage cars.
The Cars' music, greatly influenced by Orr's bass lines and vocals, has been featured in various films, television shows, and commercials, introducing their iconic sound to new generations of music fans.
