Gallacher was born on February 9, 1949, in Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland. He took up golf at the age of 11 and quickly demonstrated his natural talent, winning the Lothians Golf Association Boys Championship in 1965. Two years later, he claimed the Scottish Amateur Open Stroke Play Championship, which led to his decision to turn professional in 1967.
Gallacher's professional career got off to a flying start, earning him the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award in 1968. The following year, he secured his first professional wins in Zambia and Europe, culminating in him finishing as the Order of Merit winner and earning the prestigious Harry Vardon Trophy.
