Henry Lee Jackson, aka Big Bank Hank, was born on January 11, 1956, in the Bronx, New York City. He attended Bronx Community College, where he won several wrestling championships and graduated with an Associate's degree in oceanography. However, his passion for music soon took center stage, and he began managing local hip-hop groups, including the Mighty Force MCs.
Hank's big break came when he was discovered by Sylvia Robinson, a music producer and owner of Sugar Hill Records. Robinson was on the hunt for an act to capitalize on the burgeoning hip-hop trend, and Hank's charisma and rhyming skills won her over. She recruited Hank, along with Master Gee and Wonder Mike, to form the Sugarhill Gang.
