Hemmer holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast journalism from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. While at Miami University, he joined Delta Tau Delta fraternity and studied in Europe at the Miami University Dolibois European Center, which was then located in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg.

Hemmer's journey in journalism began in the mid-1980s, when he started in sports production at WLW-T-TV. He soon moved to the CBS affiliate WCPOTV as a sports reporter and anchor. At the age of 26, Hemmer took a nearly year-long hiatus from WCPOTV to backpack around the world, visiting countries such as New Zealand, Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Nepal, India, Egypt, Israel, and Russia. This experience helped him land a job at CNN in Atlanta a short time later. During his time at CNN, Hemmer covered significant events, including the 1996 Olympics, the O.J. Simpson trial, and the presidential elections of 1996 and 2000. In 2005, he joined Fox News Channel, where he has since become a prominent figure, co-anchoring America's Newsroom alongside Dana Perino.
