A legendary wrestler and trainer, known for his iconic "Bullet" persona and influential coaching style that shaped many wrestling careers.
Bob Armstrong, better known by his ring name Bullet Bob Armstrong, was an American professional wrestler who spanned five decades in the wrestling industry. With a career that spanned from 1960 to 1988, Armstrong held numerous championships throughout the Southeastern United States, cementing his place as a wrestling legend.
Joseph Melton James was born on October 3, 1939, in Marietta, Georgia. Armstrong's fascination with wrestling began at a young age when he watched Gorgeous George wrestle, an experience that would shape his future career. Before pursuing wrestling, Armstrong served in the United States Marine Corps in the early 1960s and was stationed in Korea, where he was named Honor Man during his recruit training.
After leaving the military, Armstrong worked as a firefighter for the Fair Oaks Fire Department in Cobb County, Georgia. However, his passion for wrestling soon took over, and he began his wrestling career in 1960, adopting the ring name Bob Armstrong. By 1966, he had become a popular face in the Savannah, Georgia area, and in 1970, he ceased working as a firefighter to focus on his wrestling career full-time.
Armstrong achieved considerable popularity in the Southeastern United States, particularly in Alabama and his home state of Georgia. He frequently wrestled for affiliates of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) and challenged Jack Brisco for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1974.
In a freak accident, Armstrong's face was severely damaged when a bench broke while he was bench pressing, causing a dumbbell to fall on his face. He required 38,000 USD worth of plastic surgery to repair the damage, including reattaching his nose. Despite this setback, Armstrong made a triumphant return to the ring, earning even greater respect from fans and peers alike.
Armstrong's legacy extends beyond his own achievements, as all four of his sons – Joseph Scott, Robert Bradley, Steve, and Brian Girard – followed in his footsteps to become wrestlers in their own right.
Bullet Bob Armstrong's impact on the wrestling industry cannot be overstated. With a career spanning five decades, he inspired countless fans and paved the way for future generations of wrestlers. His legacy continues to be felt, and he remains one of the most beloved and respected figures in the world of professional wrestling.
