This American retired amateur and professional wrestler is best known for his appearances in the World Wide Wrestling Federation/World Wrestling Federation from 1976 to 1984 and in the 1990s.
Born on August 14, 1949, in Princeton, Minnesota, Backlund grew up to be a wrestling enthusiast. He was a state finalist in wrestling during his high school days at Princeton High School. During his freshman year at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, Backlund was an All-American in both football and wrestling, finishing third in the 191 lb (87 kg) weight class.
Backlund began his professional wrestling career in 1973 under the guidance of Eddie Sharkey. He competing for the American Wrestling Association and later moved on to the National Wrestling Alliance, where he won the NWA Missouri Heavyweight Championship in 1976. Later that year, he joined the World Wide Wrestling Federation, where he would go on to make history.
Backlund's most notable achievement is his 2,135-day reign as the WWWF Champion, which is recognized as the second-longest in the championship's history. He first won the title in 1978 by defeating Superstar Billy Graham and held it until 1983, when he lost it to the Iron Sheik. He regained the title in 1994, defeating Bret Hart, but lost it again just three days later to Diesel.
In addition to his time with the WWWF, Backlund has had success in various other promotions, including Wrestling and Romance, Championship Wrestling from Florida, and New Japan Pro-Wrestling. He was inducted into the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016 and the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.
