Bobby Ross is a renowned American former football coach, best known for his impressive coaching career in both college and professional football, with a record that spans over four decades. He is particularly famous for guiding the 1990 Georgia Tech squad to the UPI national championship and coaching the 1994 San Diego Chargers to an appearance in Super Bowl XXIX.
Born on December 23, 1936, Ross graduated from Benedictine High School in 1955 and went on to enroll at the Virginia Military Institute. During his time at VMI, he started at quarterback and defensive back for two seasons and served as captain of the football team as a senior. Ross graduated from VMI in 1959 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and history.
Ross began his coaching career in the early 1960s, coaching high school football at Colonial Heights High School and Benedictine High School, both located near Richmond, Virginia. He then moved on to coaching at the college level, starting with assistant coaching stints at William & Mary, Rice, and Maryland.
In 1973, Ross accepted his first head coaching job at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, where he coached for five seasons, compiling a record of 24-31. He then spent four years as an assistant coach with the Kansas City Chiefs under head coach Marv Levy.
Ross went on to coach at the University of Maryland, College Park, from 1982 to 1986, and at Georgia Tech from 1987 to 1991, where he achieved his most notable success, guiding the Yellow Jackets to a UPI national championship in 1990. He then coached in the NFL, first with the San Diego Chargers from 1992 to 1996 and then with the Detroit Lions from 1997 to 2000.
Ross has received numerous awards and honors for his outstanding coaching career, including being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009.
