Born in Trinidad in 1944, Tench moved to London with his family at a young age. Inspired by the likes of Ray Charles and Sam Cooke, he began singing in bands as a teenager and learned to play guitar. His early years were marked by performances with bands like The Senators and The Creators, before forming The Gass in 1965 with Godfrey and Errol McLean.
The Gass played extensively in the London club circuit, performing at iconic venues like Rasputins, The Bag O'Nails, and The Speakeasy Club. The band's blues-infused sound and Tench's soulful vocals quickly gained them a loyal following. After The Gass disbanded, Tench went on to work with Jeff Beck, recording with Ginger Baker and touring with Beck, Bogert & Appice.
In the early 1970s, Tench became an official member of Humble Pie, working alongside Steve Marriott and contributing to the band's blues-rock sound. He later joined Roger Chapman and Charlie Whitney in Streetwalkers, a band that blended rock, soul, and R&B elements.
Throughout his career, Tench worked with a who's who of rock and blues legends, including Van Morrison, Eric Burdon, and Axis Point. He continued to make live appearances and record music until his passing in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of soulful vocals, masterful guitar playing, and unforgettable collaborations.
