Bonnie Bramlett, born Bonnie Lynn O'Farrell, is an American singer and occasional actress renowned for her powerful, soulful voice and energetic stage presence, particularly as one half of the duo Delaney & Bonnie.
Bonnie Bramlett was born on November 8, 1944, in Granite City, Illinois, to a steelworker father and a family that would eventually include four half- and step-siblings after her parents' divorce and remarriage. Raised in a musically inclined family, Bonnie began singing at a tender age, performing at her family church at just five years old.
In her teenage years, Bonnie started her musical career singing around St. Louis, eventually becoming a backup singer for blues legends Albert King and Little Milton, as well as RB sensation Fontella Bass. However, it was her encounter with Tina Turner that truly inspired her to pursue a singing career. In her teens, she witnessed Ike & Tina Turner's electrifying performance at a club in nearby East St. Louis, which left an indelible mark on her.
Bonnie's big break came when she became the first white Ikette in the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, filling in for Jessie Smith who had briefly quit. Although she could only stay for three days due to her mother's concerns, this experience set the stage for her future musical endeavors.
In 1967, Bonnie met musician Delaney Bramlett while performing at the opening of a bowling alley with the Shindogs, the house band of the television show Shindig. The two were married just a week later and soon formed the duo Delaney & Bonnie, signing with Stax Records. Their music blended rock, soul, and country, garnering them a loyal following and touring opportunities with British rock guitarist Eric Clapton.
Following the demise of Delaney & Bonnie, Bonnie pursued a successful solo career, releasing several albums and collaborating with various artists. Despite facing personal struggles and setbacks, Bonnie remains an icon in the music industry, celebrated for her unique voice and unwavering dedication to her craft.
Bonnie Bramlett's influence on rock, soul, and RB music is undeniable. Her music has inspired countless artists, and her trailblazing spirit as a female musician in the 1960s and 1970s paved the way for future generations of female artists.
