Boz Burrell, born Raymond Burrell on August 1, 1946, is best known for his stint as the vocalist and bassist of the iconic progressive rock band King Crimson from 1971 to 1972, and later as the original bassist of the hard-hitting rock band Bad Company, formed in 1973.
Burrell grew up in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, and developed a passion for jazz and rhythm and blues in his teenage years. He began playing rhythm guitar for the Tea Time 4, a group formed with his school pals Bernie Rudd and Brian Rocky Browne, at the George Farmer School. This early exposure to music would shape his unique style, which leaned more towards jazz and blues.
In 1965, Burrell's band, then known as Boz People, secured a contract with EMI's Columbia label, releasing four singles and backing band slots with Kenny Lynch and Elkie Brooks. Although the group saw little commercial success, it marked the beginning of Burrell's journey to stardom. In 1971, he joined King Crimson, a progressive rock band known for its complex and innovative music. During his time with King Crimson, Burrell honed his skills as a bassist and vocalist, contributing to the band's iconic albums, including "Earthbound" and "USA".
In 1973, Burrell co-founded Bad Company, a hard-hitting rock band that would go on to achieve significant commercial success. As the original bassist, Burrell's unique style and sound were instrumental in shaping the band's distinct rock sound. During his time with Bad Company, the band released several hit albums, including "Bad Company" and "Straight Shooter". Burrell remained with the band until 1982, before rejoining for a reunion of the original lineup from 1998 to 1999.
