Creator of the popular comic strip "The Wizard of Id", known for humorous and satirical commentary on politics and social issues.
Brant Parker, the renowned American cartoonist, is best known for co-creating and illustrating the beloved comic strip, The Wizard of Id. Alongside Johnny Hart, Parker brought this medieval-themed satire to life, entertaining millions with its wit and whimsy.
Parker's artistic journey began at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. Following his studies, he worked at the Walt Disney Studio, where his talent flourished. During World War II, Parker took a break from Disney to serve in the United States Navy.
After the war, Parker returned to Disney before eventually moving to New York to pursue a career as a political cartoonist for the Binghamton Press. It was during this time that he met his future collaborator, Johnny Hart, at an art contest in 1950.
The meeting with Hart marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership that would lead to the creation of The Wizard of Id in 1964. This humorous strip, set in a medieval kingdom, poked fun at politics, social issues, and human nature. Parker's clever illustrations and Hart's witty writing made it an instant hit.
Beyond The Wizard of Id, Parker teamed up with Don Wilder on the political commentary strip, Goosemyer, which ran from 1981 to 1983. He also collaborated with Bill Rechin and Wilder on the strips Out of Bounds and Crock. However, Parker eventually focused his energies on The Wizard of Id, leaving these other projects behind.
Parker's work on The Wizard of Id earned him numerous awards from the National Cartoonists Society, including:
In 1997, Parker passed the torch to his son, Jeff, who took over as the artist for The Wizard of Id. Parker continued to work on other projects until his passing on April 15, 2007, just eight days after the death of his long-time collaborator, Johnny Hart. Brant Parker's contributions to the world of cartooning remain a treasured part of our cultural heritage.
Through his work, Parker inspired generations of cartoonists, writers, and artists. His legacy serves as a reminder of the power of humor, satire, and creative collaboration.
