Born on August 3, 1966, in Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Brent Butt grew up with a passion for comedy. He attended Tisdale Unit Composite School and later briefly studied at Ontario's Sheridan College before returning to his hometown.
From Drywalling to Stand-up
Before making it big in comedy, Butt worked as a drywall contractor. However, his true calling was in humor, and he started performing stand-up comedy in 1988. He began his career in the Yuk Yuks chain in Western Canada and later moved to Toronto, where he honed his craft and built a reputation in the comedy circles.

In 2003, Butt co-created
Corner Gas, a sitcom that would change the face of Canadian television. The show, set in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, was an instant hit and ran for six seasons. Butt's production company, Prairie Pants, was instrumental in bringing this beloved show to life. He also starred in the series, playing the lovable but awkward Brent Leroy.
A Royal Command Performance
In 2005, Butt hosted a Royal Command Performance gala for Queen
Elizabeth II and
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He performed his song "Nothing Rhymes with Saskatchewan" and traded jokes with
Leslie Nielsen, making it a night to remember.
Other Ventures
Butt has continued to explore different creative avenues, including writing. In 2023, he released his debut novel,
Huge, a psychological thriller about touring comedians. He has also created the television series
Hiccups and written the 2013 film
No Clue.
