Williams was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, to Dorothy May Pampel and Gordon Lewis Williams. He was raised in a loud Catholic home of largely Irish descent, with three older siblings. Williams grew up in Elmira, New York, before moving to Middletown Township, New Jersey, during his junior high school years.
Williams attended Mater Dei High School, where he was an editorial editor for the school newspaper and a volunteer firefighter for three years at the Middletown Township Fire Department. After high school, he attended Brookdale Community College, then transferred to the Catholic University of America, and finally, George Washington University, although he did not earn a degree.
Williams' journalistic career began in the 1980s, when he worked as a correspondent for WCBS-TV in New York City. In 1993, he joined NBC News as a correspondent for NBC Nightly News, covering significant events such as the Gulf War, Hurricane Katrina, and the Iraq War.
In 2004, Williams became the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, succeeding Tom Brokaw. During his tenure, he anchored the network's coverage of several major events, including the 2011 Egyptian revolution and the death of Osama bin Laden.
In 2015, Williams faced criticism for misrepresenting events during the Iraq War, leading to a six-month suspension from NBC News. Four months later, the network removed him from NBC Nightly News permanently and reassigned him as the breaking news anchor for MSNBC.
Despite the controversy, Williams continued to work in journalism, becoming the host of MSNBC's political news show, The 11th Hour, in 2016. He announced his departure from MSNBC and NBC News in 2021, after hosting his final episode of The 11th Hour.
