Born on September 26, 1980, in San Francisco, California, Orpik was named after Herb Brooks, the legendary American Olympic head coach who led the U.S. to a miraculous victory over the Soviet Union in 1980. Growing up in Amherst, New York, Orpik attended the Nichols School in Buffalo and Thayer Academy in Braintree, Massachusetts. He later played three seasons for the Boston College Eagles, winning the Hockey East playoff championship in 1999 and 2001, as well as the NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship in 2001.
Orpik's most notable achievement with the Penguins came in 2009, when the team won the Stanley Cup. His rugged defensive play and leadership were instrumental in the Penguins' championship run.
