A Brazilian lawyer and politician who served as the Mayor of S�o Paulo from 2018 until his death in 2021, known for his efforts to improve the city's infrastructure and transportation.
Bruno Covas Lopes was born on 7 April 1980, in Santos, a beach town near São Paulo, Brazil. He came from a family of politicians, being the grandson of Mário Covas, one of the seven founders of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) and a former governor of São Paulo.
Covas began his political career as the national president of PSDB Youth. He later became the Secretary for the Environment in São Paulo state. In 2016, he was elected vice mayor of São Paulo as the running mate of João Doria.
In April 2018, Covas took office as mayor after Doria resigned to run for the state governorship. At just 38 years old, he became one of the youngest mayors of São Paulo.
Despite his short time in office, Covas made significant contributions to São Paulo, earning him a reputation as a thoughtful and effective leader.
In 2019, Covas was diagnosed with gastrointestinal cancer, which he bravely fought while continuing to serve as mayor. He underwent chemotherapy and surgeries, but eventually succumbed to the disease on 16 May 2021, at the age of 41.
During his illness, Covas showed remarkable courage and determination, inspiring many Brazilians with his strength and resilience.
Bruno Covas' life was cut short, but his legacy will be remembered for generations to come. He was a passionate and dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly to improve the lives of São Paulo's citizens.
