Born William Doyce Killen on November 13, 1932, in Florence, Alabama, Buddy Killen's journey in the music industry began as a bass player in the Grand Ole Opry. In 1953, he was hired by Jack Stapp, the manager of the Grand Ole Opry, to listen to new songs and help launch Stapp's new business venture. This chance encounter would be the catalyst for Killen's remarkable career.
When Jack Stapp passed away in 1980, Killen became the sole owner of Stapp's company, Tree International Publishing. This move marked the beginning of Killen's reign as a country music mogul.
