Calen Addison is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman, currently playing for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). With a career spanning over five years, Addison has already made a name for himself in the hockey world, representing Canada at the international level and winning numerous awards and honors.
Born on April 11, 2000, in Brandon, Manitoba, to parents Darren and Shannon, Addison is of Métis descent. Growing up in Brandon, he attended Kirkaldy Heights School and began learning to skate at the tender age of two. His family later moved to Thompson, where he developed his skating skills before returning to Brandon at the age of seven.
Addison's hockey career took off when he played major junior hockey for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League (WHL). In 2018, he was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 53rd overall, of the NHL Entry Draft. He signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Penguins on April 7, 2019.
During his final junior season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Addison was traded to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Jason Zucker on February 10, 2020. He made his NHL debut on February 16, 2021, in the Wild's 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. On November 8, 2023, Addison was traded to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Adam Raska and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
Addison has represented Canada at the international level since 2017, participating in several tournaments and championships. His first stint with Team Canada was at the 2016 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, where he won a silver medal. Following this, he competed at the 2017 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament, where he tallied two goals and six points to win a gold medal.
In 2020, Addison was selected for the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, where he led the tournament in assists for defensemen with eight and won a gold medal.
