A legendary boxer and actor, known for his rugged charm and impressive record of 87 wins and 3 losses in the ring, as well as his roles in Argentine films and TV shows.
Carlos Monzn, nicknamed "Escopeta" or "Shotgun," was an Argentine professional boxer who etched his name in the annals of boxing history as the undisputed world middleweight champion for an impressive seven years. With 14 successful title defenses against 11 different fighters, Monzn solidified his position as one of the greatest middleweights of all time.
Born on August 7, 1942, in San Javier, Argentina, Monzn grew up in poverty with his 12 siblings. To support his family, he quit school at a young age and worked various jobs before discovering his passion for boxing. Monzn's speed, punching power, and relentless work rate earned him a reputation as a formidable opponent in the ring.
Monzn's extraordinary career was marked by a record of 87-3-9, with 59 knockouts. What's more striking is that all of his losses were early in his career, and he avenged each one. He held the undisputed world middleweight championship from 1970 to 1977, successfully defending his title 14 times against a diverse range of opponents.
In 1990, Monzn was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The Ring magazine ranked him as the 11th greatest fighter of the last 80 years in 2002, and in 2011, he was voted the best middleweight title holder of the last 50 years. As of January 2018, Monzn holds the second-longest unified championship reign in middleweight history, with nine consecutive defenses.
Monzn's glamorous and violent life was avidly followed by the media and Argentine people. However, his personal life was marred by allegations of domestic violence against his two wives and multiple mistresses. In 1988, he was charged with killing his second wife, Alicia Muiz, and was sentenced to 11 years in jail.
Tragically, Monzn died in a car crash on January 8, 1995, while on his way back to jail after receiving a weekend furlough. Despite his tumultuous personal life, Monzn's legacy in the boxing world remains intact. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest boxers of all time, and his contributions to the sport continue to inspire new generations of fighters.
"I was a fighter, and I will always be a fighter."
Monzn's life was a testament to the importance of perseverance and hard work. Despite his difficult upbringing and personal struggles, he remained committed to his craft, ultimately achieving greatness in the world of boxing.
